Travel tips

  • Allow plenty of time in schedule as inter-island ships often cancel due to weather.
  • Only one ATM in Mata-Utu; preparation of cash (CFP francs) is essential.
  • Sunlight is extremely strong; bring long-sleeve rash guards and high SPF sunscreen.
  • Mosquitoes are numerous; always carry insect repellent spray for dengue fever prevention.
  • Purchase bottled drinking water. Village stores have long lunch breaks.
  • Public buses do not operate on Sundays, and taxis rarely move; arrange for walking or rental car.
  • Always ask before taking photos of islanders; obtain parental permission when photographing children.
  • Coral collection at sea and mass shell removal are prohibited by law.
  • Mobile network is local carrier only. SIM can be purchased at airport or post office.
  • Many island dogs are free-roaming but accustomed to people. Check with owners before touching for safety.
  • Voltage is 220V, 50Hz; French Type C plug is required.
  • No tipping culture, but gratuities for lodging and guides are welcome.
  • Flash photography of traditional dances is strictly prohibited. Do not walk around until the dance ends.
  • Assembly building and palace can be viewed on non-working days but obtain gatekeeper's permission.
  • Direct fire barbecues are not allowed on beaches. Use designated furnaces.
