Etiquette

- When entering traditional fale houses, remove shoes and bow at the entrance.
- Keep skin exposure modest in public places and wear a jacket when moving from the beach to town.
- Do not drink during kava ceremonies until invited; receive the bowl with both hands.
- Ask permission before taking photos, especially avoid flash photography during religious events.
- Many residents attend mass on Sundays; shops are closed, so complete shopping the day before.
- Saying 'Mana ia koe' before meals as thanks is appreciated.
- When invited as a guest, it is common to bring small gifts (sweet snacks or coffee).
- Always obtain owner's consent when touching local tapa cloth or leaf skirts.
- Shrines and cemeteries seen on the island are sacred and often prohibited from entry.
