History
Melanesian habitation predates European contact. Independence achieved in 1980 following Anglo-French condominium.
After Quirós' 1606 arrival, westerners called the archipelago 'New Hebrides.' From 1906, it was governed under an Anglo-French condominium. During WWII, it served as an Allied base. Post-war autonomy movements intensified, culminating in independence on July 30, 1980. Vanuatu maintains stable parliamentary republican democracy despite frequent cyclones and earthquakes, building the nation through tourism and community strength.
