Etiquette

  • Always address elders with the honorific 'Aka'
  • Remove shoes inside homes and do not step on floor coverings
  • Do not touch food at meals until the elder first tastes it
  • Flipping bread upside down or dropping it on the floor is considered disrespectful
  • Always serve guests warm tea about one-third full and repeatedly offer
  • Avoid direct body contact with women
  • The left hand is considered unclean; use the right hand for eating
  • Loud voices or whistling in public places are considered rude
  • As a compliment, the phrase 'invite to chaikhana' is used
  • When taking photos, avoid military facilities and mosque interiors during worship
