Etiquette
- Always stand when greeting elders
- Shouting in public places is considered highly disrespectful
- Modest dress is preferred in churches and village meeting halls
- Always ask permission before taking photographs
- Avoid handing items with the left hand only
- Bringing small sweets or coffee beans as gifts when visiting homes is appreciated
- Pointing feet at people during conversation is rude
- Do not enter village land without permission from the village chief (Chefe de Suco)
- Wait for the head of household or elder to start eating first
- Do not treat items featuring the national flag or coat of arms carelessly
- Remove hats in front of Christ or Virgin Mary statues
- Do not carelessly place the traditional cloth 'Tais' on the floor
- Avoid physical contact with women
- Littering in public is strongly condemned
- Give a slight bow to monks or sisters encountered on the street
