Travel tips

  • Bring SPF50+ sunscreen due to very strong sunlight.
  • Small bills are convenient. Some island shops do not accept cards.
  • Tap water is drinkable but purchasing mineral water is safer.
  • Public buses have flat fares per route. Confirm last bus times.
  • Ferries can be rough in high waves; prepare motion sickness medication.
  • For rainy season squalls, lightweight raincoats are more convenient than umbrellas.
  • Few mosquitoes but bring insect repellent for sandflies.
  • When purchasing coco de mer, choose certified products with export permits.
  • Most apparently private beaches are public. Check for no-entry signs.
  • Touching corals is strictly prohibited. Use reef-safe sunscreen.
  • June-August sees high waves from southeast trade winds, limiting diving sites.
  • Fishing requires licenses. Can be arranged at hotel front desks.
  • ATMs concentrated in Mahé and Praslin. Few on La Digue.
  • Drone photography requires prior permission from civil aviation authority.
  • Wine and spirits are expensive imports. Try local rum.
