History
James Cook declared sovereignty in 1775, separating from Falkland Islands dependency in 1985 to current form.
Anthony de la Roché first recorded in 1675, rediscovered by James Cook in 1775, naming after King George III. Flourished as South Atlantic''s largest whaling hub in 19th to early 20th centuries, but whaling ended in 1965. During 1982 Falklands War, Argentina temporarily occupied but British forces recaptured April 25. Became independent British Overseas Territory from Falkland Islands dependency in October 1985, with current management prioritizing environmental protection and scientific research.
