Etiquette
- It is customary to actively greet elders.
- The left hand is considered unclean; use the right hand for giving/receiving items and eating.
- Public business may stop during Islamic prayer times and Friday noon.
- Always ask permission before taking photos. Photography of military/government facilities is prohibited.
- Many households remove shoes indoors.
- Meals are commonly eaten from a shared large plate; eat from the area in front of you.
- Women's revealing clothing is best avoided in rural areas.
- Tipping culture is not strong, but small tips to restaurant staff and guides are appreciated.
- Time perception is known as "African time"; delays are tolerated generously.
- Avoid political and religious discussions in public spaces.
