History

Since French colonization began in the 17th century, it prospered through sugarcane cultivation and the slave trade, becoming an overseas department in 1946.

After Portuguese explorers arrived in the 1500s, France claimed sovereignty in the 1640s. The island underwent several name changes, including Bourbon, before settling on Réunion after the revolution. Slaves from Africa and indentured laborers from India were brought in to support the sugarcane economy, forming a Creole society. Key milestones include abolition of slavery in 1848, the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 altering trade routes, and post-WWII overseas department status, bringing it under EU law as part of France.
