Etiquette
- Friendly conversation even on first meeting is appreciated.
- Delays of 15–30 minutes are often tolerated.
- Use the honorific "Don/Doña" before names when addressing elders or people of higher status.
- Bring a small gift such as sweets or drinks when visiting someone's home.
- If offered mate or tereré, it is polite to accept at least one cup.
- Passing items with only the left hand is considered rude.
- Photography near military facilities or border areas requires prior approval.
- Loud shouting in public is frowned upon.
- At religious sites, clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended.
- Tipping culture is minimal, but 5–10% for good service is courteous.
- The national flag and anthem are held in high regard and should not be joked about.
- Offering seats to the elderly and pregnant women on public transport is expected.
- In business, small talk before getting to the main topic is customary.
- Documents and business cards are primarily in Spanish, but Guarani text is appreciated.
- Excessive physical contact with women can be seen as harassment.
