Etiquette

  • Friendly conversation even on first meeting is appreciated.
  • Delays of 15–30 minutes are often tolerated.
  • Use the honorific "Don/Doña" before names when addressing elders or people of higher status.
  • Bring a small gift such as sweets or drinks when visiting someone's home.
  • If offered mate or tereré, it is polite to accept at least one cup.
  • Passing items with only the left hand is considered rude.
  • Photography near military facilities or border areas requires prior approval.
  • Loud shouting in public is frowned upon.
  • At religious sites, clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended.
  • Tipping culture is minimal, but 5–10% for good service is courteous.
  • The national flag and anthem are held in high regard and should not be joked about.
  • Offering seats to the elderly and pregnant women on public transport is expected.
  • In business, small talk before getting to the main topic is customary.
  • Documents and business cards are primarily in Spanish, but Guarani text is appreciated.
  • Excessive physical contact with women can be seen as harassment.
