History
Following the birth of Buddha in ancient times and successive dynasties, the monarchy was abolished in 2008, establishing a federal democratic republic.
This land at the crossroads of the Himalayas and Indian civilization began with the Licchavi dynasty around the 4th century, and during the era of three Malla kingdoms, unique Newari culture flourished. In the 18th century, King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha unified the small kingdoms to establish the Kingdom of Nepal. After the Gurkha War in the 19th century, following the hereditary dictatorship of Rana prime ministers, the country transitioned to restored monarchy and constitutional monarchy in 1951. Following democratization in 1990 and a Maoist civil war from 1996, a comprehensive peace agreement was signed. On May 28, 2008, the Constituent Assembly abolished the monarchy and declared a republic. Under the new constitution promulgated in September 2015, a federal state structure consisting of seven provinces was established.
