Etiquette
- The left hand is considered unclean; use only the right hand for giving and receiving items.
- Always use honorifics (Sir, Ma, Chief, etc.) when addressing elders or people of higher status.
- Take sufficient time for greetings and inquire about the other person's well-being as a matter of courtesy.
- In some regions, remove shoes before entering homes or mosques.
- Always ask permission before taking photographs. Government facilities are strictly off-limits.
- Present gifts with both hands or with the right hand while supporting the elbow with the left.
- Lateness is relatively common, but punctuality is expected for official events.
- Food may be eaten from a communal plate using only the right hand.
- Women should dress modestly. Extra caution is required in the Islamic northern regions.
- In business meetings, start with small talk and avoid direct confrontation.
