7-Day Northern World Heritage and Desert Expedition

Travel tips

  • The dry season (November to February) is hot during the day and cold at night, so warm clothing is essential
  • The rainy season (June to September) sees flooded roads; 4WD is recommended
  • Cash is CFA francs; card usage is unavailable outside urban areas
  • Photography is prohibited at military facilities, airports, and bridges
  • Tap water is not potable; carry bottled water
  • Vaccinations (yellow fever, hepatitis A, tetanus, etc.) are required
  • Due to chronic fuel shortages, prepare spare fuel tanks for long trips
  • Accommodation outside Niamey is mostly auberges or camps
  • Market prices are negotiable; start at about half the asking price
  • Strong sunlight continues during the day, so long sleeves and sunscreen are essential
  • Avoid going out at night; arrange reliable drivers for transportation
  • French or Hausa is spoken in many areas
