- Many islanders are devout Muslims; dress modestly at mosques and in villages
- Shops temporarily close during Friday noon prayer time
- Always ask permission before taking photographs
- Passing items with the right hand is proper etiquette
- Only shake hands with women if they extend their hand first
- Some areas still practice removing shoes indoors
- Moderate alcohol consumption in public places
- Do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during Ramadan daylight hours
- Greet the village chief (Chef de Village) when visiting villages
- Present souvenirs politely with both hands
