Etiquette
- In public places, avoid exposed skin; long sleeves and long pants are preferred in the capital and local islands
- At mosques and religious facilities, remove shoes and women should cover their hair with a scarf
- Friday of the Islamic Hijri calendar is a prayer day when government offices and many shops are closed
- During the fasting month of Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daytime
- The left hand is considered unclean, so use the right hand for eating and handshakes
- Alcoholic beverages are only served at resorts and licensed facilities; bringing them in is prohibited
- Avoid excessive physical contact and kissing in public
- It is polite to obtain prior permission when photographing people
- Taking sandbanks or coral is prohibited by law
- Tipping culture is not strict, but a 10% service charge is often included at resorts
