Etiquette

  • At temples, remove shoes and hats, wear clothing covering shoulders and knees.
  • Taking photos with back to Buddha statue is considered disrespectful.
  • Pass items with right hand; left hand is considered unclean.
  • Patting the head is rude even for children.
  • Keep public displays of affection modest.
  • When touching women, wait for them to extend their hand first.
  • When invited to a home, remove shoes and bring small gift.
  • Meals are basically eaten with right hand, using only fingertips.
  • Poya days (full moon days) are alcohol-free days with banned alcohol sales.
  • Always obtain permission before taking photographs as courtesy.
