Etiquette

  • Remove shoes and dress modestly at temples
  • Women must not touch monks
  • Patting heads is considered rude
  • The left hand is considered unclean; use the right hand for giving or receiving
  • Use an open palm facing down to point rather than pointing with a finger
  • Do not step on the threshold when entering a house
  • Greet elders with respectful language and a slight nopa
  • Avoid loud arguments in public places
  • Do not point the soles of your feet at people
  • Always request permission before taking photographs
