Overview of South Korea
Advanced East Asian industrial nation driven by IT and manufacturing.
Profile
From being among the poorest countries in the 1950s, South Korea achieved the "Miracle on the Han River" through rapid growth and now holds top global market shares in semiconductors, smartphones, and shipbuilding. About half the population is concentrated in the capital region, and cultural exports such as K-POP, films, and dramas are thriving. Major social challenges include low birth rates, aging population, income inequality, and capital region concentration.

History
From the Syngman Rhee administration through military rule, democratization occurred in 1987.
Following US military rule in 1945, the republic was founded in 1948. Devastated by the 1950 Korean War, the country pursued export-led industrialization under developmental dictatorship from the 1960s onward, achieving rapid growth. After the 1987 democratization declaration, a presidential system with direct elections was established. From the 2000s, IT and cultural industries expanded, and international standing rose through co-hosting the 2002 World Cup and the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
