History
Influenced by Norman culture, it became a Crown Dependency in medieval times maintaining autonomy to present. Occupied by German forces during World War II.
Vikings arrived in 9-10th centuries, incorporated into Duchy of Normandy in 933. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, maintained unique legal customs amid delicate Anglo-French royal relations. Remained English Crown Dependency after 1204 Anglo-French separation, granted many privileges. In the 1640s became Royalist stronghold during Puritan Revolution, and in the 19th century Jersey knit sweaters became fashionable in Britain. Occupied by Nazi Germany 1940-45, Liberation Day still celebrated. Post-war expanded financial industry as tax haven and developed as tourist destination.
