Overview of Mann
A Crown Dependency island in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, known for the world's oldest continuous parliament, Tynwald, and the TT motorcycle races.
Profile
The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown Dependency of the British Crown, with its own parliament, legal system, and currency, while the UK handles foreign affairs and defense. The 572km² island features coastal cliffs, green hills, marshland, and Snaefell mountain (621m), from which four nations—England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales—can be viewed on clear days. History
Tynwald is believed to have been established around 979. Sovereignty passed between Norway, Scotland, and England before becoming a Crown Dependency in 1765, maintaining a high degree of self-governance.
The island, inhabited since prehistoric times, saw Viking settlement in the late 8th century and the establishment of Tynwald parliament. In 1266, the Treaty of Perth transferred the island from Norway to Scotland, after which control alternated between England and Scotland. The Stanley family became lords in 1405, and the British Crown purchased sovereignty in the 18th century. Developed as a resort in the late 19th century, it grew as a financial center in the 20th century. Following progressive reforms including women's suffrage and devolution of administration, the first Manx-born Chief Minister was appointed in 1986.
