History
Passed through great power control before launching self-governing government in 1979, gaining independence in 1986 under Compact of Free Association with the U.S.
Spain declared sovereignty in the 16th century, followed by rule under Germany, Japan, and the United States. After World War II, it was administered by the U.S. as a UN Trust Territory. Four districts formed a federation and enacted a constitution in 1979, trust ended in 1990, and joined the UN in 1991. Currently delegates defense and some foreign affairs to the U.S. under Compact of Free Association.
