History
Transitioned to a republic in 1953 after ancient Egyptian dynasties, Roman rule, and Islamic domination.
A unified dynasty formed about 5,000 years ago, creating the ancient civilization symbolized by pyramids. Subsequently ruled by Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, it was Islamized in the 7th century. After the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, the Muhammad Ali Dynasty pushed modernization in the 19th century. Becoming a British protectorate in 1882, the Free Officers coup in 1952 abolished the monarchy. President Nasser advocated Suez Canal nationalization and pan-Arabism, while Sadat onwards shifted toward pro-American policy. The 2011 Arab Spring toppled the long-standing Mubarak regime, with the Sisi administration continuing since 2014.
