History
After independence from France in 1975, underwent coups and separatist movements, establishing the 'Union of the Comoros' in 2001.
Gained independence in 1975 while inheriting the spice plantation economy from French colonial times. Immediately after independence, suffered from repeated coups involving white mercenaries. In the 1990s, Anjouan and Mohéli declared independence, bringing the nation to the brink of disintegration, but the 2001 Fomboni Agreement adopted a new constitution centered on rotating presidency. Constitutional reforms in 2009 and 2018 advanced centralization, and the country is transitioning to a relatively stable political system.
