History
Four colonies united to form the Dominion of Canada in 1867, gained legislative independence with the 1931 Westminster Statute, and achieved full sovereignty with constitutional establishment in 1982.
After Indigenous habitation, France and Britain colonized the region in the 16th-18th centuries, becoming British territory in 1763. Railway development and western expansion in the late 19th century led to successive provincial additions and territorial consolidation. Through two world wars, it strengthened its position as a sovereign nation on the international stage, and since the 1960s has constitutionally guaranteed bilingualism and multiculturalism. While facing diverse challenges including the Quebec independence movement and Indigenous rights restoration, it has developed a liberal social model.
