Travel tips

  • No tourist visa system exists; prior permission from the Norwegian Polar Institute is essential.
  • Landing is by helicopter as standard. Boat access is nearly impossible due to steep ice walls and sea ice.
  • Average temperature around 0°C year-round with constant strong winds and dense fog. Essential to carry cold and waterproof gear.
  • The entire island is a nature reserve with strict regulations on proximity to wildlife and sample collection.
  • Communication is only by satellite phone. Essential to have emergency beacon (EPIRB).
  • All fuel and food must be brought in and taken out; waste disposal is prohibited.
  • No medical facilities on the island. Essential to have accompanying physician and emergency evacuation plan.
  • Weather windows are short, and helicopter takeoffs/landings can be cancelled within hours.
  • Maintain at least 5 m distance from penguin and seal nesting areas.
  • Power supply is mainly portable generators and solar panels. Don't forget salt damage countermeasures.
