Travel tips

  • US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but change often comes back in Barbados dollars.
  • Flat-rate taxis from airport to major hotel areas provide peace of mind.
  • Tap water is drinkable. A reusable bottle is more convenient than buying bottled water.
  • Rainy season (June-November) has frequent short squalls, so a folding umbrella is essential.
  • Left-hand traffic makes driving easy for Japanese, but road signs are in English only.
  • Public buses have flat fares. Driving can be rough, so be careful when standing.
  • UV rays are very strong. Apply SPF50+ sunscreen frequently.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen products are recommended for coral reef protection.
  • ATMs are widely available but many don't operate at night.
  • Supermarket plastic bags are charged; bringing an eco-bag is convenient.
  • Beaches are public. Entry is free even in front of hotels, but facility use is charged.
  • Snorkeling in protected areas: catching and collecting is strictly prohibited. Subject to fines.
  • During Crop Over period, accommodations fill up early, so book 6 months in advance for peace of mind.
