After being sighted by Spanish around 1505, England officially colonized it in 1612, governed by the Somers Isles Company. Prospered with salt trade and shipbuilding by late 17th century, playing an important role in neutral trade during American Revolutionary War. Became British Royal Navy strategic base from 19th to early 20th century, functioning as Atlantic mail censorship center during WWII. Self-governing constitution established in 1968 with universal suffrage introduced. 1995 referendum rejected independence proposal, currently continuing as British Overseas Territory with high degree of autonomy.
