History
Formed in 1901 as a dominion through the union of six colonies, gradually expanding legislative powers to become an independent nation.
Aboriginal settlement dates back at least 40,000 years. James Cook claimed the east coast for Britain in 1770, and penal colonies were established from 1788. Population surged through gold rushes and wool industry development. The Commonwealth was formed on January 1, 1901, and legislative independence was established through the 1931 Westminster Statute. After World War II, the White Australia policy was abolished, actively embracing multiculturalism and immigration.
